OUIL503- In Cold Blood- Final Covers

Here are my 3 final covers for the brief.

The reason I chose to do 3 is because I wanted to be able to explore different ideas and not limit myself to just 1 design, which risks me not being entirely happy with the outcome of the brief.

Overall I am quite pleased with how my covers have turned out (maybe with the exception of cover 2). I think the concept of the covers was really good, and I have learnt a lot about how I work as an illustrator. Next job is to choose the final cover.

OUIL503- Brush Design- Brief 9

Start Date: 29/01/2017

Deadline: 15/02/2017

Brief

This brief was set by the same client as Brief , they were pleased enough with the initial marker brush that they wanted some variations on the brush. The client stated they wanted one 'scruffier' version of the brush, one 'cleaner' version, and one 'dried' version of the marker. I was looking forward to this brief as at the end I could actually market the brushes as a 'pack' to distribute as part of an actual shop that ill be looking to set up soon.

Research

There wasn't much research to be done with this one, as I was just creating several variations on the theme. I spent most of the research phase of the brief looking into how markers can be made to look differently.

Development

Again, the development was really easy, mainly just playing with the original brush to create different versions of it. I wanted the brushes to work harmoniously as a pack, but also be unique enough so that they are easily distinguishable from one another.

Outcome
Hopefully these brushes can form part of my first pack of brushes that I will be looking to sell over the coming weeks. The client was really pleased with the brushes and I've since had 3 new clients come to me for brushes as a direct result of this work which is really cool.

Outcomes below.

OUIL505- Study Task 2

Thomas Danthony

Thomas Danthony is probably the most influential illustrator to me in terms of aesthetic. His use of shape and subtle texture is something that I aspire to get better at. The application of his work is also something I want to move towards, he works a lot with marketing campaigns and advertis for product and services.

Tom Haugomat

A lot of Tom's work is very graphic based, and a lot of the work he makes is for advertising and marketing applications (see Evian campaign above). I feel his work is very similar to mine in aesthetic and in tone, very still and peaceful.

Malika Favre

Again, Malika's work is very graphic based, however dissimilarly to mine she never really includes any textured elements within her practice. Malika used to be based within the field of graphic design, this has clearly influenced her practice in terms of aesthetic as well as in the work she produces, making a lot of work for marketers and ad campaigns.

Bill Bragg

Bill's work I feel is the least similar to mine it terms of aesthetic, his work relies heavily on texture and shape, and a lot of his work is based around editorial studies. I find his work inspiring because the application and creation of his work is quite diverse within his practice. This is something I would like to achieve within my own practice.

Jeremy Booth

Jeremy's work is really similar to mine aesthetically, lots of shape and colour. I like the actual process of Jeremy's work, how he moves from hand drawn roughs to digital prints is inspiring to me.

How they promote themselves?
All of the above illustrators take advantage of their social media accounts to really push their through heavy marketing. Most of them have constant interaction with their followers and subscribers and seem to try and keep a close personal link between them and their potential clients.

Why I feel Aligned with these Practitioners
I feel my way of processing my practice is similar to all of the above illustrators. I know from his updates that Jeremy Booth works in a very similar way to myself, starting off with roughs done on paper and then moving on to digital development first on ipad and then on the photoshop. I feel my work also aligns with theirs on an aesthetic level as well, they all work heavily with shape and occasionally texture is used to compliment this. A lot of their work could be seen to cross over with graphic design.

A lot of their work is based around advertising, marketing and editorial work, these are also my main areas of interest and is what I aspire to be doing post grad.

OUIL503- In Cold Blood Cover- Cover 3 Final Design

Here is my 3rd final cover for In Cold Blood. I wanted the design of the cover to be bold and have a lot of impact, as I think a book cover is and advert for the content and should be eye catching. I chose to keep the image set on a white background to make the image 'pop' a lot more.

I chose to hand letter the text on the cover of the book, as a printed text just didn't sit right with the floating image, and I think the lettering turned out really well, I think it adds to the criminal nature of the book and the messy image it sits with.

OUIL503- Brush Design- Brief 10

Start Date: 30/01/2017

Deadline: 06/02/2017

Brief

'Create a crayon replica brush to be used in Photoshop both on Mac and on iPad Pro.'

Research
This brush presented more challenges that I first expected as I wasn't able to save the brushes under the same file type as I normally would as the Photoshop Sketch app could not have it. This was especially annoying as I only realised this once I had finished the brush, lucky I hadn't sent it to the client before. This meant I had literally 1 day to replicate the brush under a simplified file type, which is harder than it sounds as I was really limited in the amount of tools I could use.

The research consisted of experimenting with crayons, considering depth of texture and pressure put on the actual crayon to create a heavier flow.

Development
I then went on to develop the brush, starting out with a hand drawn vignette and working to moving digitally then. I thought the brush would be easy to produce as it would be quite similar to an oil brush I had made previously, turns out I was wrong and the brush ended up being closer to a pencil brush I have already made.

Outcome

I'm quite pleased with the brush overall, however, the way that I worked on this brief could have been handled better. I probably should have researched the file types prior to diving in and creating something that was pretty much useless afterwards. Luckily I was able to finish the brush on time and the client was none the wiser.

Final outcome below.

OUIL503- In Cold Blood Cover- Cover 1 Final

Below is the 1st final design for In Cold Blood. Overall I am quite pleased with how well the cover has turned out. I like the bold graphic look of it and think it would really stand out on a book shelf. I think the concept of the cover could do with some work, as I thing the message can be portrayed as quite vague without any previous explanation.

I think the texture in the blood drip really adds some depth to the image, and the separated contrast between the text and the blood drop add quite a bit of interest to the image. The best thing I got out of designing this cover is probably the use of type within my work. I previously always thought that type is used around an image as an added extra, however, through this brief I have discovered how to use type within an image to enhance it, I will definitely look to use more type within my work moving forward.

OUIL503- Collaborative- First Meeting

Today we had our first meeting for our collaborative brief. I think the meeting went really well, we had a lot of ideas bouncing around and we seemed to all be in the same mind-set about what we wanted to do with the brief. The first thing we did was go through the brief, talk about what it was asking us to do and how we could best achieve it.

I left the meeting feeling really positive about how it was going to go, we had a lot of ideas bouncing around (maybe too many?) which we could work with. We took notes and left the meeting with a load of notes and ideas to go away and think about. Going well so far.

Case Study

Aldi-
Aldi, the German-owned discount grocery chain, needed to encourage UK shoppers to change the habit of using Aldi for occasional purchases, but doing their main shop at one of its rivals.
Working with McCann Manchester, the group developed an advertising campaign based on encouraging shoppers to shift their weekly shop at Aldi and then quantifying the savings they made from this move.
Television ads, featuring real consumers, and a variety of press ads were used to prompt people to take the "Swap & Save" challenge.
Following the campaign, Aldi's market share rose from 3.5% to 4.5% in the UK and from 5.6% to 7.1% in Ireland
The retailer also benefited from an increase in the average 'basket size' bought by its shoppers, and a higher loyalty rate.
